Sydney Pratte
nLITEn Tech

Sydney Pratte is a PhD candidate from the University of Calgary studying computer science, specifically fashion technology. She’s an emerging light in the fashion world, merging fashion and technology to create garments that light up the room. Sydney explores how fashion technology can be used to tell stories on the runway. Her work highlights how technology can augment expression through dynamic garments that bring attention to social issues and personal expression.

For Sydney, Fuse33 provides an environment where she can express and explore her creative endeavours through a supportive environment, with input from artists across different disciplines. At Fuse33 there’s always someone to run an idea by.

Like-Minded People & Resources

With the help of our resources, she has seen her recent projects come to life. She helped design and create the light-up ponchos seen at Chinook Blast and helped create a light-up costume for an aerialist performer at EPOQUE by Cirque de la Nuit performance. Sydney currently has a fashion-tech garment in the works that she hopes to see at the next Beakerhead event.

“Fuse33 provides a space for people to explore or find their passion, a place to learn a new skill and interact with people they might not normally encounter,” she says. “I am a member of the Fuse33 community because it is a space that promotes creativity, exploration, and design. A place where I’m always sure to find support for my weird ideas, help where I’m stuck, or a new con-conspirator to make something next with.”

Fuse33 has helped Sydney turn her passion into her career by providing a platform to display her work and connecting her to exhibition opportunities.

“If I hadn’t been to one of their events and become a part of the Fuse community, I wouldn’t be where I am now. I love what I’m doing,” she says. “Fuse33 has provided me with a place of creative development and a group of like-minded people, enabling me to do what I love, not just something that pays the bills. I think I have been able to reach a large number of people thanks to Fuse33, it’s changed my whole life’s direction.”
